IOUSA Movie thoughts

I just finished watching this video and I am appalled and disgusted! How is it that Clinton, just a few short years ago had a balanced budget and in a matter of eight years, Bush managed to throw a gigantic monkey wrench into the whole thing!

The main themes that I got from this video are: Here is where we came from, here is what happened, here is where we are, and finally we need to fix it. What I didn’t hear was HOW we are going to fix it. We all know that we are economically going down the drain. How do we stop it and move forward from there? Do we really need foreign products so much that we owe China so much money? I get that things are produced less expensively elsewhere. I do. But for cryin’ out loud people WAKE UP!!!!! This video really made me angry.

As a single household in this economy, if I don’t have an extra dollar in my pocket to give to the hungry and homeless person on the street, I DON’T GIVE IT TO HIM! If I can’t afford the luxury of getting my hair done, I let it grow out and deal with it. If we went back to the way things were when we fended for ourselves as a country, I believe we could pull ourselves up out of this mess. Part of our economic problems is people believing that our government should support them with welfare. What happened to a “hand up” as opposed to a “hand out”? Wasn’t the welfare system designed to help people who needed it not those who chose to live off it? If you aren’t doing something productive with your life, you shouldn’t be able to suck off the system! If you are a convicted felon, you have lost your rights as a citizen and since you no longer have the right to vote, you shouldn’t have the right to take my hard-earned tax dollars either. If you are sitting on your couch, eating bon bons and watching Oprah and not doing anything to give back (volunteer work if your children are too young for them to be in school full time, or helping out at their school if they go or attending some kind of job training program), you shouldn’t be allowed to stay on welfare. I can tell you that as a single parent, I was on welfare and food stamps for the first 4 years of my child’s life. I can also tell you that I was enrolled in school full time pursuing a degree in hopes of being able to give back and be a contributing member of society as well as raising a new baby alone. When Clinton changed the welfare rules, I had to drop out six classes short of my degree and go back to working full time.

It makes me sick that we have to hire people from other countries to work our low paying jobs because we have all become too big for our britches. Do you know of anyone personally who would be open, willing, and able to pick produce for the same rate of pay that the migrant farm workers get? I don’t. How many teenagers have been raised with the goal of working at MacDonald's? How many people do you know that see working at the local carwash as non-humiliating? These people (the ones who do these jobs willingly) have more humility and sense of what used to be known as that “good ole American pride” than most of the Americans I know who were born and raised here.

If we could get back to being willing to do whatever it takes to keep a roof over our heads, food in our bellies, clothing on our backs and a nickel in our pockets I believe we could pull ourselves out of the hole we’ve dug ourselves. It boils down to treating the macro economy the same way we treat the micro economy. If you don’t have it, don’t spend it. If you can’t afford to lose it, don’t loan it out.

Now many of you may recognize the wording in this post as my lovely wife Stacie and I am so proud that our that our words sound like we are the same. Hey I even use Yiddish phrases at times (wrong context but hey I am a Gentile). But the thoughts reflect my own thoughts. If I cannot afford it I don't buy it. I am a big fan of layaway and use it often. Then if the unforeseen happens before I pay it off I can let it go and get a refund of most of the amount paid. When we have money we are free with it. When we are broke My wife is Hebraic and I am Scottish, we can define cheap!

A Solution

OK schools are bitching about class sizes and how this will cost our kids in the quality of education (sounds like an oxymoron to me) they will be receiving. Cutting music programs and other non-essential services. But not football it is too much a necessity. Like music isn't? Maybe I am little bit biased, my first wife was a band and orchestra musician and still is to this day. (we are in our late 40's and though we are divorced we are still friends)

Then take the recent provision of California courts have ruled that if you are home schooling your child you must be a certified teacher.

WOW! I thought California teachers lobby was behind this. I was wrong the courts ruled on it. So no one in the executive branch ultimately approved it. No legislature got out a word processor and made this a bill. No lobbyist for the Teachers pushed it. It came down from a courts interpretation of the law as written.

OK no matter how we have been wrapped in this provision maybe we should get the law rewritten to allow homeshooling, even better yet to encourage homeschooling. If even 1 percent of students were availed of this That would be 2 classrooms full of not students here in Roseville. I am judging by the 6000 student number I heard during orientation last fall for Stephen. If the schools were actively encouraging homeschooling they would have smaller class sizes. Parents could not bitch about the quality of education they were receiving. They could even teach creationism over intelligent design. As long as my tax dollars do not get used I do not care what they are taught. Then when we here about how California students can not compete academically it will not be the governments fault. Cant blame it on the school when your homeschooling. YOU ARE THE SCHOOL. Kick them in the ass and get them studying. Make them competitive. I learned to read using hooked on phonics in the early 60's before I even went to kindergarten. I have been an avid book junky for 45 years. Get someone hooked on something that makes them think you would be surprised. I could and have for years lived without TV I have one now because my wife is a junky, even if she is concentrating on homework the TV is on rather then turning on some music(she has itunes on her computer that she uses for homework). I need the Internet to get my message out there. TV could go away. Land line could go away, why pay for both cell phone and land line. Make people think not entertain them.
