Ebonics on TV

What has happened to our public media? As I am sure you know I use to hire people for a call center in Kansas. When I talked with a prospective employer if they could not speak standard American English I would not hire them. If when it came to questions if they wanted to "Axe me a question" I would not hire them. The site director took me into his office and asked me why I was making a racist policy. No way I told him, we are a call center and our product is the way out technicians speak. If they cannot speak good American English do we want them representing us? My justification then became official company policy because it was a "Bona Fide Business need".

So what pissed me off this morning was that they had a kid (probably Stephen's age) doing a mock interview. When she finished she said "(her name) Axeing Questions, Getting answers." When Chris Burroughs on channel 58 told her good job I could not stop cringing. That was not a good job. it was at best a nice try. If we let them get away with it when they are young they won't speak well as adults. Ask is the work not Axe. I am frustrated by how slack we have become at accepting these terms in our language. I know others agree with me because I hear them correct their kid with decent English. Now if I wasn't so old that showing 4 inches of plaid boxers above a pair of saggy pants didn't disgust me. I guess I am just too old.
